Welcome to Black Hawk Middle School! At Black Hawk, we believe all students can learn and want to grow. We believe social and emotional learning must be embedded in instruction and that we are responsible for engaging families and communities in support of learning. Black Hawk Middle School strives to educate students through engaging in collaborative and reflective practices that accelerate learning and growth. Since we are a largely diverse population, we intentionally and purposefully create activities so students can feel connected at various levels of the school: during classroom instruction, encore experiences (Unified Arts), through our many after school club offerings, and throughout various family and community engagement events.
At Black Hawk our Equity Vision is:
“All people in our school and community feel welcome, engaged, and valued. We commit to disrupting patterns that lead to inequitable access to engaging and rigorous opportunities for black students. This will be accomplished by leveraging Student Partnerships to inform planning, instruction, reflection, and adjustment.”
At Black Hawk our school motto is “Together We’re Better.” This belief is shared by our dedicated staff, motivated student body, and supportive, involved families. Together, we all work to support students and meet their social, emotional, and academic needs. You can read in one of our MMSD weekly newsletters how with our SELS curriculum “CARES” and commitment to our school motto, we completely shifted our school’s culture and climate in a positive direction. Along with contributing to this culture shift was the increased training around Developmental Designs and Restorative Justice practices. We have spent the past 3 years really focusing on more community building and restorative approaches building wide at Black Hawk. In doing so we have seen a tremendous impact on our culture and climate along with how we manage academic as well as behavioral systems. Our school vision is every student confident and capable and we believe building positive relationships and partnerships with students and families is essential to supporting this vision.
It is my hope that families find their Black Hawk years to be positive, effective, and rewarding!
